Nowcast: Satellite imagery looks quite clear right now out past the islands, in both visible and IR. Your wind speed looks like it’s been between 10 and about 13 kts for the last day or so, hopefully that is comforatble enough for you. This agrees with ASCAT, which puts it at NEerly. At 8 UTC, RTOFS current forecast says you should have around 3 kts. Pressure 1018 mb (that’s you’re measurement), falling over the last 6 h…. I think I see a semidiurnal cycle in pressure in your measurements. The models have it at 1016 mb now and falling by about 1 mb over the next day as high pressure over the northern Sahara weakens.
Long term forecast:
Some patches of southward currents develop south and west of where you will hopefully be the day after tomorrow of just up to 2 kts… not anywhere near as prominent a feature as the current one. While winds for today are forecast to be around 15 knots (+/- 2-3 knots), they should decrease to around 10 knots or less starting Thursday.
Even longer term: The GFS is developing a storm way to your north, around 30 N, in the middle of the Atlantic, that it then strengthens while moving south, dies out, and has some remnant bits arriving west of your islands by Sunday or so. These remnants could have NEly wind in excess of 20 knots, possibly higher. Waves associated with this wind would be 2-3 m in height. The ECMWF has it weaker by 4 mb and further north than the GFS does by Friday, but that’s as far as it goes. We’ll keep an eye on it.
Next 12 hrs, current position (06-18UTC):
Wind: ~15-18 knots from the NE, decreasing to around 12 knots by 18UTC
Pressure: 1018 mb and falling to 1016 mb
Waves: 1-1.5 m in height
Current: This current stream is elongated N-S. One you pass it, it should rapidly decline back to not much current.
18ish hr forecast at Intermediate position (~1/31/12 00UTC):
Wind: ~15 knots from the NE, decreasing after 0UTC
Pressure: Decreases to around 1015 mb then starts to increase again
Waves: 1-1.5 m in height
Current: You *might* still have >1 kt of SW current.
24 hr forecast to the west a degree-ish (~1/31/12 06UTC):
Wind: 10-15 knots from the NE, decreasing in strength after this period
Pressure: ~1016 mb
Waves: 1-1.5 m in height
Current: You should be out of that current stream, essentially no current.
