Night - Mostly Cloudy

Winds decreasing over the next 24 hours

Finally a break for the rowers! Winds will be decreasing throughout today from ~10-12 knots currently to ~5 knots at 0UTC on Thursday.

Current Conditions: Current winds are likely around 9-12 knots from the ENE; this assessment comes from model output as the ASCAT satellite’s website is currently down. Satellite imagery shows partly-mostly cloudy conditions in your vicinity, mostly low or mid-level clouds. Currents near you are still weak and disorganized (according to RTOFS) and significant wave heights are 2-3m from the N.

Short-term Forecast: Conditions should be pretty quiet for the next 24 hours. Significant wave height will remain around 2-3m from the N, shifting around 18UTC from the NW. NOAA Wavewatch shows no wind waves for the period. Winds should be decreasing in strength over the day from 10-12 knots from the ENE currently, to 3-6 knots from the ENE around 2/28 0UTC. Winds on 2/28 should remain fairly calm (3-6 knots) and will come from the E to NE. As mentioned yesterday, the weakest winds are to your north. Currents are still disorganized and weak. Cloud cover will be around 25-50% for the majority of the period, decreasing a bit during the day and increasing again around 0UTC 2/28.

Longer-term Forecast: As mentioned the current low pressure center in the North Atlantic has a front that is tracking to your north, further north of the weakest wind area previously mentioned. It is not likely to impact you, aside from potentially a bit of extra clouds during the first half of 2/27. The next North Atlantic low pressure system will start strengthening on Friday. It appears that winds from 17N-20N at 40W (where you are) should remain weaker and that the brunt of this center’s fronts will pass well to your north (with winds around 15-18 knots near 24N,40W). Due to the interaction of the tropical flow with this low, winds in your vicinity should be fairly weak over the next few days, but may be highly variable in direction, coming from the ESE to the N depending on the location of the low at that time. We’ll keep you informed as this system develops over the next few days.
