I am currently in western Quebec (Bristol to be more exact) with very little internet and cell phone access. I have been enjoying the slower pace. Most of my time time is spent cursing at my computer screen while I withdraw ideas from my mind for my book. Trying is the key word here. I have been crushed by a depression-laden writers block.
This has given me lots of time to play with my 5 month old or enjoy the outdoors. I have been cross country skiing, doing manly weights like rotten beam squat, rolling log push-ups and birch stump throw. Baby Jefferson is well on his way to manliness, too. He is in the Jolly Jumper getting those baby thighs jacked and ready for his career as a salsa dancer.
My brother-in-law came up about a week ago, armed with beer. Mmm… I have really been enjoying Grolsch 500 ml tall boys, a dutch beer readily available in bulk at Quebec Costos. Mmm… Bulk Beer. Mostly, though, I prefer the liquid nourishment of local microbreweries, like Driftwood Brewery in Victoria, BC. My bro brought up some good ale from Beau’s Brewery. Beau’s is family run and makes a wonderful Bog Water winter ale – warms you from the inside out.
I have also been trolling the internet for other ocean rows. There is a 16 person catamaran set to break a world record. It is skippered by a Paralympian grandma from California, and organized by a middle-aged economist form Georgia (of USSR fame). Joining the crew are a mish mash of people, including some fellow Cannucks in their early 20s, and late 50s.
