“What about the pirates? The war, disease, and AIDS?”
These were common questions that were asked of us when we spoke of traveling to Senegal, which apparently has had the misfortune of being located somewhere in Africa. Contrary to popular western beliefs, Africa is indeed much more than a continent filled with hunger, child soldiers, poverty, and thieves. Unfortunately, this is sometimes how people interpret the media. Meanwhile, many Africans are currently thinking that the USA is a bad place to go due to all the crazies running around shooting children.
As far as I know, the only real issue with pirates is on the complete opposite coast of this vast and diverse continent. I’ve been here over a month and haven’t been shot at, contracted any diseases (that I know of), or been robbed. Senegal has had a well-functioning democracy for many years and the people take great pride in their “Teranga”, or hospitality. Even though I am looked at as a very wealthy person, I feel quite safe walking down dark alleys in the middle of the night. The communities here often take care of their own policing and social security, which means that if you are caught breaking the law, you risk getting kicked out of the community and losing all of your support.
It’s fascinating that people had more concern about me visiting Africa than they did about me rowing across the Atlantic. The fact that this continent is as mysterious and unknown as the Atlantic Ocean to many people, is all the more reason to come and explore it for yourself. As most travelers to Africa will agree, you will be met by some of the most friendly, hospitable, and beautiful people on the planet.
