Night - Isolated Showers

Southerly winds continue through Friday – Possibly favorable winds on the horizon?

After a brief lull tonight, winds and waves will build again Friday. The weekend may bring possibly favorable northerly winds, but the window to take advantage of them will be short.

It looks like you will have a brief break in the weather tonight before another front approaches on Friday. At the moment, Tofino Airport nearby is not recording observations. The last observation it had was at 6pm at which time the wind was out of the south at 5 knots. Overnight the winds will likely pick up a westerly component but during the day Friday they will swing around back to the southerly and likely increase speed. Waves will also build on Friday. There are also rain showers in the forecast.

Long Term: There does appear to be a period of more favorable northerly winds over the weekend but every forecaster I have talked to has expressed that the situation this weekend is very unpredictable: there are many different possibilities that could happen. Also, the model shows a small current of weak southeasterly winds flowing right along the coast of Vancouver Island during this time and since the period may be short, I’m not sure how far west you want to go to catch those northerlies. But that is your call and hopefully the picture will become more clear tomorrow. Even though the winds may become more favorable, it does not appear that the waves will be decreasing much, either.
