High Winds as Front Passes Through Today

A front will slowly pass over the region and bring high winds and waves through Wednesday night. Forecast Canada has issued a Gale Warning for the region. Conditions will briefly improve Wednesday night into Thursday, before another storm arrives on Friday night.

Good Morning,

I am glad to see that you are still at the hot springs this morning, since it looks like the water is going to be quite rough today. Conditions may improve enough that you can begin to row tonight. Currently, Forecast Canada has issued a Gale Warning for your area with 34-47 knots winds. Their forecast specifically states that their will be winds from the south and southeast throughout the next two days. Winds will start between 25-35 knts this morning and diminish to 10-20 knots by midnight. Winds will slightly increase to 20-25 knots by noon on Thursday before diminishing to 10-15 knots by Thursday evening. Forecast Canada is also predicting waves of 2-3 meters and rain throughout today.

Current Conditions:
Estevan Point, which is just to your north, has had winds from the east-southeast between 15-20 knots gusting to near 30 knots and decreasing pressure for the last few hours. The frontal system is going to slowly pass through the region. Forecast Canada states that the front is to your northwest extending from Explorer to Cape St. James. It will continue to move southeast be near Cape Scott by 11 am. Here is an image of satellite observed surface winds in your area. http://manati.orbit.nesdis.noaa.gov/ascat_images/cur_25km_TEST/zooms/WMBas37.png The front appears to be on the far left hand side.

Short term forecast:
The GFS and NAM is suggesting that the front will pass through your region between 5-8pm tonight at which points winds will switch from coming from the south to coming from the west. Winds will the strongest this morning, between 25-30 knots and gusts near 35 knots. Around noon winds should start to diminish but remain from the south. Overnight the winds should be around 10 knots and be from the west. While the resolution of the wave forecast is coarse it appears that waves will be at their largest this afternoon and evening at approximately 3-4 m.

Long term forecast:
It appears that a ridge may try to form on Thursday. However a weak low pressure system and short wave disturbance is predicted by the GFS and NAM to pass over your region on Thursday night. Beginning on Thursday morning winds will once again come from the south and increase to 10-15 knots with gusts near 20 knots. After this short wave passes through I expect conditions to improve for a short time as another, stronger ridge begins to build. While winds Thursday night and Friday morning will be around 15 knots with gusts to 20 knots the winds will be from the west. The next front appears to arrive on Friday night into Saturday with strong winds once again from the south gusting near 35 knots. Currently the models are taking this system north of your position, so conditions may not be as bad as you move south.
