We are the Ocean

The more time I spend on the water, the less I feel I am working for or acting on behalf of the Ocean. Instead I am recognizing the interconnectivity that lies between me, you, us and the Ocean. We are working with the Ocean to find a mutually beneficial future. We pursue the truth of our interdependent relationship through science, spirituality and our shared human experiences. As the future of the Ocean and humankind merge, we recognize our long history and our fragile present. We must care for the Ocean like we care for ourselves, because without the Ocean, we are nothing. That is why I believe: We are the Ocean.

Our crops grow food because of the hydrologic power of the Ocean to create rain. Our livestock eat food because we feed them critters from the sea. Our northern climates stay mild because of the Ocean, our southern climates stay cool. Our mountains were once sediment formed at its bottom depths. Most of our civilizations choose to live near the Ocean. We eat its salt. We eat its fish. We are the Ocean.

Our bodies are made up of particles that were once part of the ocean. Once our physical forms return to raw matter, this matter will eventually make its way into the ocean. We are the Ocean.

When you get away from the hustle of the highways, ever present lights and ADHD shopping centers of modern society, you become more aware of the fragile connectivity that holds all of us together. Whereas, before this trip I thought I was on a mission of conservation on behalf of the Ocean, now I realize that I am building a relationship with the Ocean that will enable conservation. I have power, yes. I am a steward of this Ocean, yes. But the Ocean is my steward. I am humbled by the vast power and absolute volition of the Ocean. Long after all human life has passed from the planet, the Ocean will continue to exist. The Ocean is eternal.

We are the Ocean.
