Day 13: Land at sea – transiting the Cape Verde Islands

I saw land for the first time in 10 days last night, or at least I think I did in the form of a few lights to our north. It’s interesting to be rowing right through the middle of these islands and yet have no sight of land, even in the middle of the day the haze obscures the view.

Also last night in the dark we saw our first ship in 5 days, passing us in the opposite direction. Ominous moving lights in the distance provide a sense of presence and security to an otherwise dark and choppy night. Its red & green, port & starboard lights moving slowly from one horizon to the next.

Bioluminescence is consistently lighting up our dark, long sleepy rowing shifts. The faint green glow with each dip of the oars slowly fades behind us, guaranteeing at least that we’re making progress – even on the slower, choppier evenings.
