Right now, we are anchored in Humpback Bay in the Johnstone Straight. The tidal current is too strong to row against so the name of the game is to wait. Wait in the rain.
Earlier this morning at 0200 (2:00a.m), Rick and I weighed anchor in the rain at blubber bay. While the others slept, we rowed through eddies and currents in the dark as tugboats pushed and pulled their loads. As morning light broke, the wind and currents picked up.
It is rainy right now, but sprits are good. I’m thinking I may jump in the straight for a bath. It’s been a couple days…and I’m already wet.
Yesterday we picked up an artist friend of mine, Wendy Wacko. She owns a couple art galleries in Whistler, Jasper and Banff. She also loves to paint landscapes.
When she heard of our plans to row around Vancouver island in a rowboat she pounced. “Please Adam. I would love to join you. If only for a few hours… It has been a dream of mine to intimately experience the Inside Passage!”
Wendy believes that you must intimately experience a landscape before you can paint it. Only in her 60s, Wendy has many years of great art creation behind her and ahead of her. However, her ability to endure uncomfortable environments may wane sooner.
I have been impressed with Wendy’s ability to be pleasant and cheery in the face of wet, cold weather. She stayed on deck all night, nodding in and out of sleep as Rick and I rowed through the night. I felt like a crew of soldiers delivering their queen to her secret suitor in the mountains.
Until next time, Adam
