Saturday’s Seattle Public Schools FAMILY SYMPOSIUM and RESOURCE FAIR provided OAR Northwest and opportunity to debut school program offerings, staff introductions and inquiring conversations with students and family members. After the vessel was settled into the front yard of the Garfield High School, Rick Tarbill and OAR Northwest Expedition Member hosted visitors aboard to view North America’s most technologically advanced rowboat.
Inside the high school, Elise Ehrheart, OAR Northwest Program Coordinator and AmeriCorps Member spoke with fair attendees seeking ways to become involved and follow the expedition team. Additionally, teachers and PTA representatives visited our information table and boat to learn how to involve their entire classroom and school.
OAR Northwest’s new school programs brochure became a useful tool in communicating available free and fee-based programs, such as Adventuring. Students meet expedition team members at school assemblies before OR after the expedition and climb aboard the specialized rowing vessel to experience shipboard living. Additionally, students communicate with team members, engage in an interdisciplinary curriculum and analyze research data collected during the expedition. Thanks Taz-Vic Design for your help!
