Hi Chris - I'll reply to you in more detail via email, but yes we do have some overlap. You just simply cannot get enough good leverage on a short inboard oar with enough outboard length to do some real boat moving. Depending on the conditions, our thumbs/hands were saved due to carrying the handles carefully through the recovery with appropriate spacing, but the real damage came to our shins.

I met Greg in Port Townsend the weekend of the rowing race... I am preparing for a rowing trip from Scotland to Iceland in May of 2011 and have a couple of questions you guys would be well suited to answer.... Very basic- do you have your oar handles over lapping- if so, what do you do in rough water? I'm finding that its a real danger to smashing my thubs on the buttons. Also , what kind of rudder are you using? Hope the preparations for the 2011 race are going well. Chris

Hi rowing team,
It was great to meet Jordan & Rick in Port Townsend in June & have the opportunity to talk with them about their experiences of rowing on the ocean. Unfortunately I did not meet the rest of the team. I just briefed thru your La Push sea trials & appears that it went well enuff. It was interesting to hear that you are able to make ruffly 3 kts which is what I was able to make on my rowing trips and over the full length of the trips I averaged out at 2 kts. (that included daysn that I didn't row). I made a 6 month 2,500 mile solo row from Port Townsend to Glacier Bay & back in 1994. It was gratifying to see the similarities in design between your open ocean racing boat & my Inside Passsage cruiser as I essentially had to think up my boat.
If there's any thing I can share with you about my experiences of long distance rowing & what I learned from it please don't hesitate to ask. I'd be happy to talk with all of you about it.
Best of Luck,
Scott Davis

You are right Steve, I knew their were a lot of safety boats and logicaly I know to stay with the boat because it will float its just hard for me not to imagine a swim in that washing machine. Thanks again for putting it together!
